Scratchgravel Hills Project

The MBG began engaging in the BLM’s recreation planning process shortly after incorporating as a nonprofit. We helped develop a community-based proposal to the BLM, spent dozens of hours collaborating with other user and interest groups to refine the community proposal. Finally, in 2024 we signed a memorandum of understanding with the BLM in 2024 to build nonmotorized trails in the Scratchgravels.

With the help of Ales for Trails funding, we started building trails in late 2024. The first trail opened up a new part of the landscape that didn’t have an existing trail. This is the first step towards a 14-mile belt-line trail that wraps all the way around the Scratchgravels. In 2025, again with funding from Ales for Trails, we built a better climb to the top of Scratchgravel Peak.

We have more ambitious plans for 2026 and beyond as we take advantage of grant funding to leverage our dollars into more miles of trail. In 2026 we will see an expert-level technical downhill bike trail descending from Scratchgravel Peak as well a 1.6 mile accessible trail loop from Norris Trailhead. Following those projects, we will continue on the belt-line trail and build the flow trails on the slope uphill from Head Lane.

You can get involved by helping hand finish trails on volunteer work days, sign up for trail maintenance, and of course by donating to our Scratchgravels fund. All donations not only go directly to our trail construction project, but are multiplied by providing match for our grants.
